Supporting journalists and the media in Syria (24/08/2009)

The TAWASUL ('connect') project in Syria receives £300,000 in British funding to train journalists and strengthen the quality of the media sector in the country. It also aims to promote professionalism, inter-cultural dialogue and social and religious co-existence.

Launched in May 2009, it is implemented by UN Development Programme and the Syrian Ministry of Information. The participating journalists from the visual media were given guided training on social and religious co-existence; the result of which was displayed during the official launch of TAWASUL. In the next stage, TAWASUL will host a series of meetings between the journalists and religious leaders, academics, and the media industry. The aim is to expose journalist to community diversity, social and religious co-existence issues.

In this video Foreign Office minister Ivan Lewis meets some of the journalists taking part in the project and engages with them on the issue of the UK's role in the region.
